Save our Gulf dot org

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

By now everyone is well aware of the tragic oil spill along the Gulf Coast. It is now estimated that between 19 million and 39 million gallons of oil have leaked into the Gulf of Mexico. This means that anywhere between 5,000-6,000 barrels of oil are leaked every day. The National Wildlife Federation reported that more than 150 endangered sea turtles and 316 sea birds are dead. On top of this there have been 1,000 miles of wetlands and beaches put at high risk, fisheries damaged and the looming threat of Hurricane season and the devastating affects it would have on the Atlantic Coast. There is no question that this disastrous event has impacted the lives of many.

To create change during a time like this takes a continued effort. A significant contributor to this cause is the Waterkeeper Alliance group who run the Save Our Gulf website. Their goal is “to coordinate the efforts of Gulf Waterkeepers who are fighting to protect the Gulf Coast, its communities and environment, from the devastating BP oil disaster.” Waterkeepers are the voice of the waterways and their communities and strive to protect and maintain the environmental laws. In order for the Waterkeeper Alliance to continue putting their efforts toward what matters, NR will be sponsoring and hosting their website.   Our goal is to make a contribution to the continued success of the Waterkeeper Alliance.

NR Hosting the Aegisub Project

Friday, May 28th, 2010

One of the great aspects of working in this industry is being involved with so many different companies that are embarking on so many different projects. One project we wanted to highlight is the Aegisub project. “The Aegisub Project is a community-driven effort to write the BSDL licensed cross-platform subtitle editor Aegisub. Composed completely of volunteers passionate about subtitling, as a project it strives to be open, fair and most of all: free.” This allows for people to be assisted in the creation of subtitles, translations, and complex overlays using audio or video. To learn more about the Aegisub project and what they provide please visit their website.

Since its creation in 2005, Aegisub has continued to achieve their goals and grow in popularity. We are pleased to be hosting their website and providing them with network reliability. Amar Takhar at Aegisub described his experience with NR as “With Network Redux hosting us we’re now able to spend more time on development and less worrying about our infrastructure. Previously, various projects have been placed on hold due to the lack of stability and hardware capacity. We’ve been given the opportunity to add an expansive set of online services and Quality Assurance features such as Automatic Crash Reporting, Automatic Updater and a Community Script Archive.”

We look forward to the continuing growth of Aegisub and to be their preferred hosting provider.

Ten off the wall facts

Monday, May 17th, 2010

… you might not have known about us.

1. For new and existing customers, we will migrate your data to our network from any platform. Yes this includes Windows. We recently had a customer from a vanilla platform at a competitor need a move, he was very pleased with the results. We scraped his data and manually moved and configured it to precise specifications.

2. We actively support Wordpress Multi-User (WPMU). One of our largest MPMU customers is WebTrends.

3. We’ll build any configuration you throw at us. A recent customer was told “no” by every service provider he called. We said yes.

4. High Availability is our passion. DRBD is just one of the many HA technologies we’ve configured for customers.

5. Our HQ and Datacenters are in one of the most (some argue the cleanest) city in America. And yes, the price for power is worth it. Remarkably our prices remain much lower than some of our competitors in environmentally challenged locations.

6. We are privately owned, operated and maintained. No Venture Capital. We grow as a result of client interest and demand. And it works, we have been profitable since year 1. While the VC vultures have circled, our answer remains no.

7. We have assisted Tier 1/2 PCI DSS customers with full compliance on our network. Granular Managed Services see these audits through the entire way.

8. We treat ourselves as an actual customer. Our own network utilizes OpenFire, Ubersmith, HA MySQL, OpenVZ, Watchguard and 37 Signals HighRise, to name a few.

9. We host one of the largest open source projects in the open source community.

10. We do this for the customers and the community. Your success is ours, and we’ll work as hard as we must to see this through.
